SAN FRANCISCO – The Chicago Cubs today selected the contract of left-handed pitcher Tim Collins from Triple-A Iowa. Right-handed pitcher Alec Mills was optioned to Triple-A following last night’s game. Collins will be available for the Cubs tonight when they continue their three-game series at the San Francisco Giants.

Collins, 29, joins the Cubs for the fourth time this season as he has posted no record and a 3.52 ERA (3 ER/7.2 IP) in eight relief outings during his first three stints from April 10-25, May 25-26 and June 13-19. He has gone 1-3 with one save and a 4.67 ERA (14 ER/27.0 IP) in 28 relief outings with Iowa this season, limiting foes to a .202 batting average, as he has allowed only four hits to a left-handed batter (4-for-37, .108). Collins signed a major league contract with the Cubs in March.

Overall, Collins is 12-17 with 48 holds and a 3.62 ERA (97 ER/241.1 IP) in 274 major league relief appearances with Kansas City (2011-14), Washington (2018) and the Cubs (2019). He returned to the big leagues last year with Washington after not pitching in the majors since 2014 due to a pair of Tommy John surgeries in 2015 and 2016. In his return with the Nationals last year, Collins posted no record with four holds and a 4.37 ERA (11 ER/22.2 IP) in 38 relief outings. He also made 30 relief appearances with Triple-A Syracuse, going 2-4 with a 3.94 ERA (14 ER/32.0 IP).

Mills, 27, has posted no record and a 4.35 ERA (5 ER/10.1 IP) in two starts with the Cubs this season. With Iowa this year, Mills has gone 6-2 with a 4.73 ERA (42 ER/80.0 IP) in 15 appearances (14 starts).

Chicago’s 40-man roster now stands at 40 players.
