Dansby Swanson named as a Top 10 MLB shortstop

by -

January 27, 2023 – Chicago Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson was ranked sixth on MLB Now’s Top 10 Shortstops Right Now! last night. The 2021 World Series champion Swanson, who makes his debut on the best shortstops list, finished one spot ahead of 2021 MLB All-Star Bo Bichette of the Toronto Blue Jays and one spot behind two-time Gold Glove Award winner Francisco Lindor of the New York Mets. In addition to Swanson, teammate Ian Happ ranked ninth on MLB Now’s Top 10 Left Fielders Right Now! last Tuesday night.

On last night’s countdown, MLB Network insider Tom Verducci said on Swanson, “He’s always hit velocity really well. He made big time improvements on the breaking stuff. You know his defense is very steady at shortstop. He doesn’t have the world’s best arm, but he makes every play at that position. He’s another guy if you go back to baserunning, I think he’s one of the top-four or five shortstops in terms of running the bases. You know about his pedigree, he’s won in college, he’s won on the big league level. Yes, this is a winning player, I think his best years are ahead of him.”

Hosted by MLB Network’s Brian Kenny alongside MLB Network analysts, each Top 10 Right Now! ranking considers player performance over the last three seasons, offensive and defensive metrics, both advanced Statcast data and traditional numbers, and expert analysis by the MLB Network research team.
