Fowler to be 1st African-American to play in World Series for Cubs

Tony Crumpton Tony Crumpton - Senior Editor -

Cubs center fielder Dexter Fowler will be the first African-American player to play in the World Series in Cubs history.

Fowler will achieve that feat when he steps into the batter's box in the first inning in Game 1 of the World Series against the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday.

Back in 1945 when the Cubs played in the World Series, African Americans were not allowed to play.

"Wow ... speechless. Thanks for sharing this fact. I will carry it with me," Fowler tweeted to a reporter.

Fowler hit .333 with three doubles, a home run and four RBIs in the NLCS series against the Dodgers.
