CINCINNATI – The Chicago Cubs today selected right-handed pitcher Shane Greene and recalled outfielder
Alexander Canario from Triple-A Iowa.
Greene will wear uniform No. 18 and Canario, looking to make his major league debut, will wear uniform No. 4. Both will be available for today’s split doubleheader against the Reds at Great American Ball Park. Greene, 34, signed a minor league contract with Chicago June 25 and in five starts with Iowa beginning August 6 went 1-1 with a 2.16 ERA (4 ER/16.2 IP). He walked nine, struck out 20 batters and limited opponents to a .200 batting average, .314 OBP and a .283 slugging mark. The six-foot four-inch Greene is 24-29 with 67 saves and a 4.53 ERA (237 ER/470.2 IP) in all or part of nine major league seasons with the Yankees (2014, 2022), Tigers (2015-19), Braves (2019-21) and Dodgers (2021-22). He was a 2019 American League All-Star with Detroit and posted a 1.18 ERA (5 ER/38.0 IP) with 22 saves in 38 relief appearances before he was traded to Atlanta at the deadline. Greene in eight postseason appearances in 2019-20 with Atlanta posted a 2.08 ERA (2 ER/8.2 IP) with two walks and nine strikeouts. Canario, 23, has hit .276 (40-for-145) with 12 doubles, eight home runs, 35 RBI and an .866 OPS in 36 games for Triple-A Iowa since his promotion July 14. In his last 16 contests since August 9, Canario has batted .333 (23-for-69) with 1.075 OPS thanks to eight doubles and six home runs to go along with 14 runs scored and 18 RBI. Canario opened the season on the injured list after undergoing surgeries in November of last year to repair a broken ankle and dislocated shoulder, injuries suffered during the Dominican Winter League season. He is ranked as the organization’s 14th-best prospect by MLB Pipeline after he was ranked as the ninth-best prospect following last season. The right-handed hitting Canario was acquired by Chicago from San Francisco with right-handed pitcher Caleb Kilian July 30, 2021, for infielder Kris Bryant. In six minor league campaigns, Canario has hit .264 (455-for-1,724) with 103 doubles, 15 triples, 91 home runs, 319 RBI and an .847 OPS in 455 games. He has seen time at all three outfield positions, most extensively in center field (201 games).
