Jed Hoyer on whether Cubs will be buyers or sellers at trade deadline

by - Senior Editor -

The Chicago Cubs have not played up what they are capable of this season record-wise, with a lot of close losses that have included a lack of clutch hitting and mediocre bullpen play.

Cubs President of Operations was asked by reporters on Tuesday when he would know if the team would be buyers or sellers at the trade deadline.

Hoyer is hopeful that the Cubs can get on a nice roll soon.

“End of July,” Hoyer answered on his timeline if the team will be a buyer or seller. “I’d love to know sooner. I’d love to rattle off a long winning streak and feel like, OK, all these questions are not going to be asked anymore. That would be the hope."

Hoyer is not going to panic and see how the season goes.

"Certainly, we’re not going to make any decisions early. Listen, we had a really good month, and we had a really bad month. We need to play well. The frustrating thing is that we just haven’t been able to rattle off win streaks. If you’re going to get swept, like we have a few times, you’re going to have to do the same thing to opponents. Our focus is we need to be consistent as a team and claw our way back into the race. It’s not that far of a climb. We just need to play consistent baseball, and my hope is we do that.”

The Cubs will have some nice pieces if they decide to sell as veteran starter Marcus Stroman would be a centerpiece for any team wanting to make a deep playoff run.
