Report: Jake Arrieta signs with Padres

by - Senior Editor -

Former Chicago Cubs pitcher Jake Arrieta has reportedly signed with the San Diego Padres on Monday.

The Padres will have to pay around 25 percent of the MLB minimum salary and that will be saved by the Cubs.

Arrieta had a dismal 5-11 record with a 6.88 ERA and 1.76 WHIP in 20 starts this season.

During his time with the Cubs from 2013-2017, he had a 68-31 record with six complete games, five shutouts, two- no-hitters, and a sparkling 2.73 ERA in 128 starts.

He also earned the 2015 N.L. Cy Young Award and was a 2016 National League All-Star.

Arrieta will now be teammates with former Cubs ace Yu Darvish who is currently on the injured list with a back issue.

“We thought it was the right thing to do for him,” Jed Hoyer said after releasing Arrieta. “If he can catch on somewhere, maybe a change of scenery would help him. And for us, it seemed like the right time.”
