WATCH: Highlights of Cubs' hard-fought win over Giants

by - Senior Writer -

SAN FRANCISCO — With the odds stacked against them, the Chicago Cubs (55-47) overcame plenty of adversity en route to defeating the San Francisco Giants (52-51) 4-1 at Oracle Park on Wednesday. In addition to starting second baseman Addison Russell being demoted the minors prior to the game, the Cubs were also forced to deal with a late scratch of projected starting pitcher Jon Lester, who is currently battling bronchitis.

Furthermore, during the game, Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant departed due to right-knee soreness that was exacerbated during a swinging strikeout in the top of the fifth. Interestingly, Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo also left the contest following a swinging strikeout in the top of fifth but for a very different reason, as Rizzo was ejected for arguing with the home-plate umpire between innings. In the end, the three home runs hit by the Cubs proved to be enough for them to vanquish the series of unfortunate events that stood in their way, with the North Siders toppling the Giants to cap off the 3-game series.
