CHICAGO — With his 18th dinger of the year, Chicago Cubs shortstop Javier Baez reached out and connected on a pitch thrown over the outside edge of the plate for a solo shot against the New York Mets on Thursday. Sending the Wrigley Field crowd into a frenzy, Baez swatted a 404-foot blast to left-center.

Putting the Cubs up 7-3 via his second extra-base hit of the night, Baez, who hit an RBI triple in the third inning, slugged the long ball off Mets reliever Robert Gsellman in the bottom of the seventh. The round-tripper left the bat at 104 miles per hour and moved Baez to within one home run of the 100-homer mark for his career, as Baez now has 99 taters to his name.
