Willson Contreras placed on IL, Cubs recall catcher

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today placed catcher Willson Contreras on the 10-day injured list with a right hamstring strain and recalled catcher Taylor Davis from Triple-A Iowa. Davis will be available for the Cubs this afternoon when they conclude their three-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers at Wrigley Field.

Davis, 29, joins the Cubs for the second time this season, as he batted .200 (3-for-15) with one homer and four RBI in six games during his first stint from April 12-May 16. He has now played parts of three seasons in the big leagues with the Cubs, batting .242 (8-for-33) with one double, one homer and seven RBI in 19 games. With Iowa this season, Davis is batting .250 (45-for-180) with three doubles, five homers, 22 RBI and a .358 on-base percentage in 53 games.

With Iowa last year, Davis batted .275 (98-for-356) with 18 doubles, four homers and 41 RBI in 107 games, playing 67 games at catcher, 24 games at first base and 12 games at third base. Davis went 2-for-5 (.400) with two RBI in five games with the Cubs last year after making his big league debut in 2017, batting .231 (3-for-13) with one double and one RBI in eight games. Davis was originally signed by the Cubs as a minor league free agent on July 11, 2011.

Contreras, 27, is batting .275 (81-for-295) with 15 doubles, 19 homers and 57 RBI in 87 games with the Cubs this year. He was the starting catcher for the National League at last month’s All-Star Game.
