Cubs Corner with Bob Fiorante: MLB playoff picture, Trade deadline, Unwritten rules, more

by - Staff Writer -

On this edition of the Cubs Corner, presented by Coach’s bar and grill, Anthony welcomed AL expert Robert Fiorante back to the show to talk about the Cubs/Sox series, the MLB playoff picture, the upcoming trade deadline, and baseball’s unwritten rules.

The Cubs sit at 18-10 and are coming off a tough series with the White Sox (17-11).

The pair analyzed all three games. In-game one, the Sox completely outslugged the Cubs with six homers, four off of Jon Lester as the White Sox beat the Cubs 10-2. The second game was much closer, but the home run ball still bit the Cubs. Another four homers from the White Sox saw the Cubs lose 7-4. Game three went the Cubs’ way after a brilliant ten strikeout outing from Yu Darvish and a two-run bomb from Kyle Schwarber to give the Cubs a narrow 2-1 win.

After that, the two talked about the trade deadline and how they do not expect many teams to be sellers because with an expanded playoff and shortened season, as many organizations are within striking distance of a playoff spot. They agreed that both Chicago teams would be in the market for pitchers, preferably starters for the Sox and relievers for the Cubs.

Then the group analyzed the current playoff picture in the MLB.

In the NL:

Dodgers

Cubs

Braves

Padres

Cardinals

Marlins

Giants

Rockies

In the AL:

A’s

Twins

Yankees

Rays

Indians

Astros

White Sox

Blue Jays

Finally, the group talked about Fernando Tatis swinging and hitting a grand slam in the late innings of a game in which the Padres were winning by seven runs, and both agreed that they had no problem with the young stars’ performance.

That and more on this edition of the Cubs Corner:
