MESA – The Chicago Cubs today selected right-handed pitcher Jesse Chavez from Triple-A Iowa. Chicago’s 40-man roster now stands at 40 players.

Chavez, 38, signed a minor league contract with Chicago last month. He is in his second stint with the team after he was acquired by the Cubs from Texas, July 19, 2018, for minor league left-handed pitcher Tyler Thomas. The right-handed pitcher went on to go 2-1 with four saves and a 1.15 ERA (5 ER/39.0 IP) in 32 relief appearances for Chicago, walking five and striking out 42 batters.

Chavez last season won a World Series championship with the Atlanta Braves, going 3-2 with a 2.14 ERA (8 ER/33.2 IP) with a 1.01 WHIP in 30 games (four starts). He made seven outings (one start) for the Braves in the postseason, throwing 6.1 shutout frames including 2.0 scoreless innings in the World Series against Houston.

The six-foot one-inch Chavez is 44-60 with 52 holds, eight saves and a 4.44 ERA (477 ER/966.2 IP) in 511 major league games (83 starts) with Pittsburgh (2008-09), Atlanta (2010, 2021), Kansas City (2010-11), Toronto (2012, 2016), Oakland (2012-15), the Dodgers (2016), the Angels (2017), Texas (2018, 2019-20) and the Cubs (2018). He has walked 307, struck out 868 and pitched to a 1.34 WHIP.
