CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs tonight acquired minor league outfielder Greg Deichmann and minor league right-handed pitcher Daniel Palencia from the Oakland Athletics for left-handed pitcher Andrew Chafin.

Deichmann, 26, has batted .300 (62-for-207) with 13 doubles, three triples, four home runs and 34 RBI in 59 games for Triple-A Las Vegas this season, his first at the Triple-A level. He has drawn 49 walks to contribute to a .432 on-base percentage and an .881 OPS for the Aviators.

Originally selected by the Athletics in the second round of the 2017 draft out of Louisiana State University, the left-handed hitting Deichmann has batted .248 (217-for-876) with 49 doubles, 11 triples, 30 home runs, 128 RBI, 133 walks and a .348 on-base percentage in 243 career minor league games. He has played 193 games in right field, 53 games at first base, 14 games in left field and six games at third base.

Ranked as the Athletics ninth-best prospect in the system by MLB.com, Deichmann played for Mesa in the Arizona Fall league following the 2019 season and was named to the All-AFL Rising Stars team after leading the league with eight home runs in 23 games.

Palencia, 21, is in his first professional season after he signed with Oakland as an international free agent out of Venezuela in February of 2020. The five-foot 11-inch righthander has made six starts for Low-A Stockton this season, going 0-2 with a 6.91 ERA (11 ER/14.1 IP), six walks and 14 strikeouts.

Chafin, 31, posted a 2.06 ERA (9 ER/39.1 IP) with 17 holds and an 0-2 record in 43 games for Chicago this season. He allowed one home run, walked 12 and struck out 37 to go along with a 0.84 WHIP.
