This week in Chicago Cubs history

by - Correspondent -

CHICAGO -- Every week we will look at historical events that happened on the calendar dates of a given week and pick a few of them that stand out to us. This week in Cubs history is all about the most important player in Chicago Cubs history, Ernie Banks.

On August 22nd, 1982 was when the Cubs retired Ernie Bank’s number 14 at Wrigley field as he is the last player to ever wear that number on the North Side.

On August 24th, 1971: Banks hit a home run in a 5-4 loss to Cincinnati at Wrigley Field. It was his 512th Home Run of his career and was the last one he ever hit in the Major Leagues.

On August 27th, 1960: Banks drove in his 100th run of the season. He went on to win MVP that year and was the last short stop to eclipse the century mark in RBI’s until Brooks Robinson did it in 1985.

What a week for in the history of the Cubs and for Mr. Cub himself. Banks finished his career with 2528 games played. All of them of the Cubs. He had a .274 AVG, .330 OBP, and a .500 SLG. 10,395 Hits and 1,636 RBIs.

As far as World Series are Concerned, let's win two!
