Ben Zobrist to re-join Cubs

Zo is coming back.

Veteran outfielder Ben Zobrist has told the Cubs that he will try a comeback next weekend for a minor league rehab assignment (could last up to a month) according to Theo Epstein.

Zobrist can be on the restricted list up to 30 days while working himself back in shape and also won't count against the 40-man roster during that time.

“We’re thrilled,” Epstein said to reporters on Friday night in Milwaukee.

For the season, Zobrist is batting .241 with 10 RBI. He has until Aug. 31 to get off the restricted list to be eligible for the playoff roster. End of August is a soft target date for his full return.

Zobrist returning more than likely won't change what the Cubs will try to do with different trade scenarios, but he just made the Cubs bench much more dangerous if he can get back to his old self in the next month or so.

Ben has been on personal leave as he and his former spouse Julianne Zobrist filed divorce paperwork in separate courts to end their marriage that had lasted since 2005.
