Cubs activate infielder from 10-day injured list

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today activated infielder Nick Madrigal from the 10-day injured list.

Madrigal, 25, batted .203 (16-for-79) with three doubles, two RBI and a stolen base in 23 games for the Cubs this season prior to being placed on the 10-day injured list, May 10, with a low back strain. The right-handed hitting infielder hit .143 (1-for-7) with two RBI in two games during a rehab assignment, May 28-29 with Triple-A Iowa.

The five-foot, eight-inch Madrigal was acquired by the Cubs from the White Sox, July 30, 2021 with right-handed pitcher Codi Heuer for right-handed pitcher Craig Kimbrel. In 106 career major league games with the White Sox (2020-21) and Cubs (2022), Madrigal owns a .293 average (112-for-382) with 16 doubles, four triples, two home runs and 34 RBI. He was named a Top-100 prospect according to Baseball America and MLB Pipeline prior to the 2019, 2020 and 2021 seasons.

Originally selected by the White Sox in the first round (fourth overall) in the 2018 First-Year Player Draft, the Sacramento, Calif. native played three seasons at Oregon State University.
