CHICAGO — The Chicago Cubs today activated right-handed pitchers Daniel Winkler and Brandon Workman from the COVID-19 related injured list. In corresponding moves, right-handed pitcher Pedro Strop was returned to the South Bend Alternate Site and left-handed pitcher Justin Steele has been optioned to the alternate site.

Winkler, 31, has no record with a 2.25 ERA (1 ER/4.0 IP) in five relief appearances for the Cubs this season, walking four, striking out five and allowing two hits in 18 batters faced. Since signing a major league deal with Chicago in December of 2019, Winkler has posted a 2.82 ERA (7 ER/22.1 IP) with two holds in 23 relief outings for the Cubs, walking 15, striking out 23 and recording a 1.25 WHIP.

In all or part of seven seasons with the Braves (2015-19) and Cubs, Winkler is 8-2 with two saves, 35 holds and a 3.52 ERA (48 ER/122.2 IP) in 140 career relief appearances. He has walked 58 and struck out 138, good for an average of 9.3 strikeouts per 9.0 innings pitched.

Workman, 32, is 0-1 with a 4.91 ERA (2 ER/3.2 IP) in four outings for Chicago, walking two and striking out five. The right-hander signed a one-year minor league contract with the Cubs on February 18 after pitching in 21 games with the Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies in 2020, going a combined 1-4 with a 5.95 ERA (13 ER/19.2 IP). Workman is 25-21 with a 3.90 ERA (132 ER/304.2 IP) in 213 career appearances.

Both Winkler and Workman were placed on the COVID-19 related injured list on April 12.
