Cubs make decision on Anthony Rizzo's team option

by - Senior Editor -

The Captain will be back in 2020.

The Chicago Cubs have reportedly picked up the $16.5 million option for beloved first baseman Anthony Rizzo on Sunday.

The team will likely make it official later today.

His team option was originally at $14.5 million, but he had two top-five finishing in the MVP voting in 15-16 that boosted the amount to $16.5 million.

The 30-year old batted .293 with 27 homers and 94 RBIs this past season.

For his career, he has batted .273 overall with 218 homers and 729 RBIs.

The Cubs also have a team option for Rizzo for 2021, and more than likely, they will keep him around for an additional $16.5 million and likely longer.

On Saturday, the Cubs also announced that they had picked up an option on starting pitcher Jose Quintana.
