Cubs make several roster moves

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today selected left-handed pitcher Kyle Ryan from Triple-A Iowa and optioned right-handed pitcher Cory Abbott to Iowa. To make room for Ryan on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Robert Stock has been designated for assignment.

Ryan, 29, begins his fourth stint with the Cubs this season and has no record with a 3.38 ERA (1 ER/2.2 IP) in three relief appearances, walking two and striking out two. He was designated for assignment, May 7, and outrighted to Iowa, May 9. In 13 outings with Iowa this season, Ryan is 2-0 with one save, a 1.93 ERA (4 ER/18.2 IP) and a .080 WHIP while striking out 22 compared to five walks.

Ryan is in his fourth season with the Cubs organization after signing with the club on December 29, 2017. The lefthander appeared in 18 games in 2020, going 1-0 with a 5.17 ERA (9 ER/15.2 IP), four holds and one save. In 2019, Ryan went 4-2 with a 3.54 ERA (24 ER/61.0 IP) and 14 holds while limiting left-handed hitters to a .226 average (21-for-93) in a career-high and team-leading 73 games.

An original 12th round draft pick of the Detroit Tigers in 2010, Ryan owns a career 13-8 record with a 3.86 ERA (89 ER/207.1 IP) in 180 appearances (seven starts). He has stranded 81 of 115 inherited runners, walked 81 and struck out 141 batters.

Abbott, 25, has no record with a 4.32 ERA (4 ER/8.1 IP) in four relief appearances for Chicago in MLB debut season. He is 1-3 with a 6.03 ERA (21 ER/31.1 IP) in six starts for Iowa this year.

Stock, 31, made his Cubs debut this past Wednesday in a start against the Mets, allowing five runs in 4.0 innings. He has appeared in nine games (two starts) for Triple-A Iowa this season, going 0-3 with a 4.12 ERA (9 ER/19.2 IP).
