Cubs officially eliminated from playoff contention

by - Senior Writer -

CHICAGO — Entering Wednesday, the Chicago Cubs' playoff-elimination number stood at one, as the Cubs trailed the Milwaukee Brewers by five games with both teams scheduled to play five more regular-season games. With one National League postseason berth still up for grabs, the Cubs' only route to playing in October was to win out and hope that the Brewers lost the rest of their contests.

Unfortunately for the North Siders, who took on the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park on Wednesday night, their playoff aspirations were completely dashed when the Brewers defeated the Cincinnati Reds. By virtue of their 9-2 victory over the Reds at Great American Ball Park, the Brewers clinched the fifth and final National League postseason berth, meaning that the Cubs will miss out on the postseason for the first time since 2014.
