Cubs reportedly in contact with veteran second baseman

by - Senior Editor -

The Chicago Cubs might not be done this offseason.

Cubs beat writer Jordan Bastian has reported on Tuesday night that the Cubs are showing some interest in veteran second baseman Jason Kipnis.

"With a potential opening at second base, Cubs have been in contact with free-agent 2B (and Chicago native) Jason Kipnis," Bastian posted on Twitter. "Had .446 SLG vs RHP last season, compared to .342 vs LHP. Former teammate of new Cubs coach Mike Napoli."

The 32-year is currently still a free agent and it wouldn't be the worst idea to sign him to a one-year deal if they are trying to bring Nico Hoerner slowly along at second base. For Kipnis, this would be a dream come true for him to get back on the North Side to finish his career as he grew up in Northbrook and a huge Cubs fan.

Kipnis hit .245 with 17 homers and 65 RBIs (82 wRC+) with the Cleveland Indians last season. He is a tough hitter against righties with a .284 in 70 at-bats in 2019.

For his career, the lefty hitter is a .261 hitter with 123 homers and 529 RBIs (career 103 wRC+). He is also a two-time All-Star.

The Indians drafted him in the second round of the 2009 draft.
