CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today claimed right-handed pitcher Robert Stock off waivers from the Boston Red Sox.

Stock, 31, is 2-2 with four holds and a 4.24 ERA (30 ER/63.2 IP) in 52 career relief appearances between the Padres (2018-19) and Red Sox (2020), striking out 67 batters in 63.2 innings while walking 31. His most extensive big league action came in his debut 2018 season with San Diego, in which he posted a 2.50 ERA (11 ER/39.2 IP) and was 1-1 with four holds in 32 relief appearances.

The 6-foot 1-inch, 214-pound Stock last season appeared in 10 games for the Red Sox covering three stints, going 0-1 with a 4.73 ERA (7 ER/13.1 IP) with 10 walks and 14 strikeouts, after he was acquired by Boston off waivers from Philadelphia on July 26.

Originally selected by St. Louis in the second round of the 2009 draft as a catcher out of the University of Southern California, Stock converted to pitching in 2012 and is 22-11 with 17 saves and a 3.74 ERA (136 ER/327.0 IP) in 217 career minor league contests, all but seven as a reliever. In his last two minor league seasons spanning 2018-19, he struck out 87 batters in 67.2 innings, good for an average of 11.6 strikeouts per 9.0 innings.

Chicago’s 40-man roster stands at 38 players.
