CHICAGO — Injuries have defined the 2021 season for the Chicago Cubs, and an injury suffered by shortstop Javier Baez made for a surprising lineup change prior to Wednesday's game. Baez was scratched from the starting lineup shortly before the first pitch due to a right thumb sprain.

At the time of the Cubs announcing the lineup adjustment, no details concerning how Baez, who hit three home runs in the last two games, sprained his right thumb were provided. Sergio Alcantara started in Baez's place at shortstop in the contest between the Cubs and Philadelphia Phillies at Wrigley Field.
