Cubs News: 'Multiple teams' believe Willson Contreras is available this winter

by - Senior Editor -

The Chicago Cubs will probably make a few moves this offseason as they try to bolster their ballclub for 2020.

The GM Meetings in Scottdale will be cranking up next week and ESPN reporter Jeff Passan is reporting that Willson Contreras may be available for teams via trade.

"Multiple teams in search of catching help believe Cubs catcher Willson Contreras will be available this winter," he posted. "The Cubs will get creative this winter, and with a deep catching free agent market, they could trade Contreras and begin retooling under new manager David Ross."

This is probably a tough pill to swallow for Cubs fans but Contreras would have significant trade value which is one position they have some quality depth in the major and minor league level. This isn't really crazy breaking news as the ballclub pretty much said there are no untouchable players as they try to improve their ballclub this offseason.

"We’re open to change. We’re open-minded about this roster, and I expect to have a lot of trade discussions this winter,” Epstein said at his post-season press conference.

Contreras batted .272 with a career-high 24 homers and 64 RBIs in 105 games this past season.

He is still under control for the Cubs for the next three seasons before he hits free agency. He is projected to make around $4.5 million in 2020.

In three years with the Cubs, he has a .267 average with 67 total homers and 227 RBIs.

This might be shaping up as one of the most interesting offseasons for the Cubs in distant memory. Stay tuned to CubsHQ as we try to keep up with the latest news.
