Report: Javy Baez could sign with Mets early in offseason

'El Mago' might be in New York for more than just a few months.

Former Chicago Cubs star Javy Baez was traded right before the trade deadline to the New York Mets for a top tier outfielder prospect.

It has been a rocky road with the Mets since his arrival, but all signs point to a possible long-term deal, according to SNY's Andy Martino.

"On the day of thumb gate, it was a near-certainty that Baez would soon be a former Met," he wrote in a recent article. Now, according to league sources, there is a real chance that Baez and the Mets will agree early in the offseason on a contract extension that would install him at second base for years to come.

"Baez could still hit the open market and take his place among the class of elite free agent shortstops that includes Carlos Correa, Trevor Story, and Corey Seager. If he does, the Yankees are expected to be a crosstown suitor because they were one of the most aggressive teams in pursuit of Baez at this year's trade deadline, according to sources."

It should be interesting to see which team will end up paying around $150+ million for El Mago.

In 2021, Baez hit .265 with 31 homers and 87 RBIs.
