The Blue Jays have reached a one-year deal worth $3 million with veteran righty Tyler Chatwood.

The deal could be worth as much as $5.5 million based on performance incentives and a physical still needs to be approved.

The organization had an interest in Chatwood before he signed with the Cubs on his previous 3-year, $38 million deal in free agency.

The plan reportedly is to use Chatwood out of the bullpen instead of a starter this upcoming season.

As a Cubs player in 67 appearances, he had a 4.70 ERA across 199 innings as a starter and middle reliever.

In 2020, he had a 2-2 record with a 5.30 ERA over five starts.

Since 2017, he is ranked around the 90th percentile on fastball and curve spin rate.

He will join a Blue Jay rotation consisting of Hyun Jin Ryu, Robbie Ray, Tanner Roark, Nate Pearson, and Ross Stripling.

The Cubs were expected to let him go in free agency after underachieving during his contract with the Cubs.
