PITTSBURGH — An alarming scene unfolded at PNC Park on Saturday, as a Pittsburgh Pirates player was stretchered off the field after being elbowed in the face during a brutal collision. First baseman Phillip Evans ran into right fielder Gregory Polanco while the two Pirates tracked down a foul ball hit by Detroit Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera.

The unfortunate incident unfolded with the Tigers leading the Pirates 9-5 in the top of the sixth. With both defensive players' eyes fixated on the high fly ball, neither saw the other coming. As a result, Polanco accidentally elbowed Evans in the side of the face, and Evans subsequently collapsed to the ground.

Eventually, Evans was stabilized on a stretcher with protective padding around his head and neck area. Concerned teammates looked on and offered support as Evans was carted off the field and transported to a hospital for evaluation. Although he was shaken up, emotionally and physically, Polanco was able to stay in the game.
