WATCH: Lester makes fun of Rizzo, Schwarber in press conference

by - Senior Writer -

The story of Tuesday's clash between the Chicago Cubs and the Miami Marlins was Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant's walk-off 3-run homer that gave Chicago a 5-2 win. However, lost in the allure of the offensive excitement was the defensive ineptitude put on display at times by the Cubs.

Chicago committed two errors on the evening and also suffered from several other defensive mishaps throughout the course of the contest, leaving Cubs pitcher Jon Lester a bit miffed when talking about the defense in his postgame press conference. Lester started on the night, and he gave up two unearned runs. Both runs were scored in the third inning, when left fielder Kyle Schwarber dropped a fly ball on what should have been the second out. As a result, Lester playfully ribbed Schwarber when discussing the Chicago outfield after the game.

"Our outfielders allows (pitchers) to feel comfortable, other than Schwarber doing circles when he had to go literally two feet to his right," Lester jokingly said while referencing Schwarber's error.

Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo also dealt with some adversity in the field when he botched an easy play on a dribbler up the first-base line in the fifth inning. Rizzo took his eye off the ball while attempting to snag it with his glove and ended up having to barehand it while doing a split to record the out. Although Rizzo showed plenty of athleticism by managing to keep his foot on the bag while pulling off the split, Lester poked fun at him when addressing the media.

"I don't know what he's doing over there," Lester sardonically quipped about Rizzo. "I kept yelling to get there to touch it before it went foul. And then he bobbles it and falls on it. God knows what he's doing over there."

At 35 years of age and with countless quality starts under his belt, Lester has earned the right to have a little fun at the expense of his younger teammates, and the press conference featuring the witty banter concerning the defensive gaffes made for comedic gold.
