Cubs News: Contreras homers, drives in game-winning RBI to break losing streak

MIAMI -- Cubs rookie Willson Contreras had a two-run homer and drove in the game-winning run in the seventh to lead the Chicago Cubs to a 5-4 win over the Miami Marlins on Friday evening. The Cubs went into the game losing four in a row, making it their longest losing streak of the season. Cubs fans can fret no more, however, as Contreras put an end to the skid with his three RBI night.

A few Cubs players were notably missing due to injuries including Anthony Rizzo, Miguel Montero, and Dexter Fowler. Heyward was in the leadoff spot for the first time as a Cub as the team tried to break their recent offensive woes.

The Cubs came out swinging in the first inning as the nine batters came up to bat. Bryant and Contreras hit home runs while Coghlan hit a triple. Javier Baez and Addison Russell also had hits in the inning to put the score at 4-0.

The Marlins quickly answered back with four runs off of a homerun hit by Bour. The Marlins only had one hit in the inning but were able to score four runs thanks to an error and two walks. It’s the first game this year where both teams have had four runs or more in the first inning.

With the game still tied at four going into the fourth inning, Russell led off the inning with a single as Hendricks followed it with a sacrifice bunt. Heyward was walked, but nothing came out of the inning as the Marlins got out of the jam. An amazing catch was made by Baez in the inning as he gave up his body to catch a foul ball, flipping himself over into the crowd to make the play.

The seventh inning the Cubs took the lead as Contreras gets his third RBI of the game scoring Bryant and putting the Cubs up 5-4. Wittgren took over on the mound and got the Marlins out of the inning as the Cubs left the bases loaded. The Marlins left two on as they were unable to score.

Heyward was hit in the 8th inning, making him the third Cub player to be hit in the game (Contreras was hit in the 5th, and Zobrist was hit in the 7th). Rondon made J.T. Realmuto flyout, had Hechavarria groundout, and Gillespie also hit a groundout to end the ball game.

The Cubs still have a nine-game lead in their division over the Cardinals as they will face the Marlins tomorrow in Miami as John Lackey faces off against Paul Clemens.

Cub fans should see Cubs slugger Anthony Rizzo back in action tomorrow.
