KANSAS CITY – The Chicago Cubs have optioned left-handed pitchers Rex Brothers and Justin Steele to the club’s South Bend Alternate Site, reducing the active major league roster from 30 to 28 players.

Brothers, 32, posted an 11.57 ERA (3 ER/2.1 IP) in two relief outings. He struck out five batters, including two strikeouts in a scoreless inning of work, July 25 vs. Milwaukee. Brothers signed a minor league contract with Chicago in December of 2019.

Steele, 25, was recalled August 2 but did not appear in any games in his first stint on a major league roster. He was originally selected by the Cubs in the fifth round of the 2014 Draft out of George County High School in Lucedale, MS. He has gone 16-23 with a 3.62 ERA (129 ER/320.2 IP) in 80 professional appearances, all but five as a starting pitcher.

Chicago’s 60-man Player Pool roster remains at 58 players, with 28 active players (plus three 10-day injured list players) in Chicago and 27 players in South Bend.
