Ian Happ: Cubs next breakout star

by - Correspondent -

Every year during Spring Training fans talk about who their favorites are and make predictions about who’s going to be best. I am no different than anyone else as I say Ian Happ is going to be a breakout Star this year for the Cubs.

The 23-year-old Happ hails from Pittsburg, PA, went to the University of Cincinnati and was drafted in 2015, in the 1st round, 9th overall, by the Chicago Cubs. Up until 2017, Happ has been playing in the minors.

Due to outfielders Jason Heyward and Ben Zobrist being on the disabled list last year, the Cubs needed an extra outfielder and recalled Ian Happ, on May 13, 2017. Last year, Happ made sure to show Maddon what he was made of; there was no way he was going back to the minors. He played in 115 games hitting .253 with 62 runs, 92 hits, 24 homers, and 68 RBI in 364 at-bats.

Since Spring Training has started, Happ has been playing like its playoff time. In only four games, he has three home runs already, plus he’s diving for balls out in the outfield and catching them on a regular basis. He’s young and hungry and wants more than just be a role player on the team. He wants to play and be mentioned alongside the big guys like Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo. Personally, I think they should put him in the outfield on a regular basis. I’ve heard rumors and seen with my own eyes this spring that Happ would make a good leadoff man. Well, he certainly would get the game moving that’s for sure.

There’s something to be said though, about someone who is young, eager and a powerful hitter; they are easier to coach because they haven’t acquired as many bad habits yet.

Everyone needs to keep an eye on Ian Happ this year as it is his year to shine. I wouldn’t be surprised if he made the All-Star team this year either. He wants it and has what it takes to be a breakout star.
