Cubs sign righty starter for 3-year contract |
CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs and right-handed pitcher Tyler Chatwood have agreed to terms on a three-year contract through the 2020 campaign. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Chatwood, who turns 28 next week, is 40-46 with two saves and a 4.31 ERA (310 ER/647.2 IP) in 130 major league appearances, all but 17 as a starter, covering six seasons with the Los Angeles Angels (2011) and Colorado Rockies (2012-14, 2016-17). Since missing the entire 2015 campaign due to Tommy John surgery, Chatwood is tied with Stephen Strasburg for second in the National League in road ERA the last two seasons with a 2.57 mark (45 ER/157.1 IP), trailing only Clayton Kershaw and his 2.16 ERA on the road (minimum 10 starts). The righthander broke into the big leagues with the Angels in 2011 before being traded to the Rockies the following offseason. He went 8-5 with a 3.15 ERA (39 ER/111.1 IP) in 20 starts for Colorado in 2013 before being limited to four starts in 2014, undergoing Tommy John surgery that year and missing the 2015 campaign. Chatwood returned to the Rockies in 2016 and went 12-9 with a 3.87 ERA (68 ER/158.0 IP) in a career-high 27 starts, which included going 8-1 with a 1.69 ERA (15 ER/80.0 IP) in 13 starts on the road. He went 8-15 with one save and a 4.69 ERA (77 ER/147.2 IP) in 33 appearances, 25 as a starter, with the Rockies last season. Overall since joining the Rockies in 2012, Chatwood turned in a 3.18 ERA (89 ER/251.2 IP) in 50 outings (44 starts) on the road and posted a 5.17 ERA (146 ER/254.0 IP) in 53 outings (44 starts) at Coors Field. Chatwood was originally selected by the Angels in the second round of the 2008 Draft. Chicago’s 40-man roster is at 35 players. The Cubs' rotation is a work in progress, with additional depth needed. For now:
chatwood $13M salary in 2020 escalates to $15M if he makes all-star game in 2018 AND 2019 or receives 1 cy young vote in 2018 OR 2019. it escalates to $17M if receives 1 cy vote in 2018 AND 2019. so 2 writer votes could mean $4M. #cubs
