Cubs News: Ben Zobrist pays for pregame spread to be catered for his Single-A team

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Single-A baseball is not exactly a lucrative venture, and the players at that bottom tier of the minor leagues essentially work for peanuts. Therefore, it was admirable of Chicago Cubs veteran Ben Zobrist to have a pregame spread from McDonald's catered to the South Bend Cubs on Sunday. Before taking part in his third rehab game with the South Bend club, Zobrist ensured that his teammates enjoyed a hearty pregame meal.

Pregame spreads are not exactly staples of Single-A ball, so it is common for big leaguers undergoing rehab at the Single-A level to use part of their substantial MLB salaries to pay for filling meals as a display of appreciation. For example, Cubs starting pitcher Yu Darvish had lobster and steak catered while playing for South Bend last year. On Sunday, oodles of McDonald's sandwiches and fries were doled out in the clubhouse at Four Winds Field at Coveleski Stadium, which was made possible by Zobrist's nice gesture.
