Brewers, Reds join protests over Kenosha shooting and refuse to play tonight |
The Milwaukee Brewers and the Cincinnati Reds have decided not to play Wednesday as they joined the Milwaukee Bucks in protest over the shooting of Jacob Blake.
The Brewers had a clubhouse meeting two hours after the Bucks decided to boycotted their game and decided to do the same. “The players from the Brewers and Reds have decided to not play tonight’s baseball game," a statement read from the players. "With our community and our nation in such pain, we wanted to draw as much attention to the issues that really matter, especially racial injustice and systemic oppression." The team released the following statement: "The Milwaukee Brewers organization joins the players in their decision to not play tonight’s game. We need to pause and reflect on the events that are causing such pain and hardship to our local community and country. The entire organization is committed to putting the spotlight on racial injustice, inequality, and the necessity for change." According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, more teams are debating on whether to play tonight. "Following the cancellation of the Milwaukee Brewers and Cincinnati Reds game tonight, more teams are discussing the possibility of not playing, sources tell ESPN," Passan posted on social media. "Among those currently discussing it: the Seattle Mariners, who have the most Black players of any team in MLB." Reds pitcher Amir Garrett tweeted the following on Monday. "They put 7 rounds into Jacob Blake in front of his children," he posted. "I watched the video, you telling me he can’t be tazed? He immediately has to be shot? Smh apparently black lives still don’t matter. I am outraged this morning." The NBA has postponed their slate of playoff games tonight.
