Cubs call up pitcher, place infielder on injured list

by - Senior Writer -

CHICAGO — The Chicago Cubs made a couple of roster moves on Monday, as they called up right-handed pitcher Adbert Alzolay from the South Bend, Ind., alternate site and and placed infielder Ildemaro Vargas on the injured list. Alzolay has made three appearances for the Cubs this year and has been called up and sent down multiple times.

As for Vargas, who has made a few starts for the Cubs recently, he was placed on the 10-day IL due to a right hamstring strain, and the move is retroactive to Sept. 20. Alzolay is expected to serve as a bullpen arm for the Cubs in the final week of the regular season. It is no guarantee that either player will make the Cubs' postseason roster, assuming the club reaches the playoffs.
