SAN DIEGO – The Chicago Cubs today announced that Jason McLeod will be transitioning from Senior Vice President of Amateur Scouting and Player Development to Senior Vice President of Player Personnel. In his new role, McLeod will be involved in all aspects of the Major League operation with particular focus on the roster construction and day-to-day workings of the Major League club.

“Jason has made immense contributions to the organization in his eight years supervising Amateur Scouting and Player Development,” said Theo Epstein, Cubs President of Baseball Operations. “He helped build and grow two departments that were crucial in the Cubs’ rebuild, championship and run of sustained success. As his career has evolved, Jason is prepared for new challenges at the Major League level, where his strengths in evaluation, development and culture-building will be quite impactful.”

McLeod has spent 24 years in baseball operations and the professional coaching ranks, the last eight seasons overseeing amateur scouting and player development in the Cubs organization. In his first four drafts with Chicago, the club selected Albert Almora Jr. (2012), Kris Bryant (2013), Kyle Schwarber (2014) and Ian Happ (2015) while 2018 first-round pick Nico Hoerner became the first member of that draft class to play in the majors when he made his big league debut this week. Almora, Bryant and Schwarber were key contributors to the club’s 2016 World Championship.

Prior to joining the Cubs, McLeod spent two seasons as Assistant General Manager with the San Diego Padres from 2010-11 and seven seasons in scouting with the Boston Red Sox from 2003-09, as the drafts he oversaw with the Red Sox produced 2007 World Series Champions Dustin Pedroia and Jacoby Ellsbury among many other future big leaguers. From 1994-2003, McLeod held various positions within baseball operations with the Padres during his first stint in San Diego.

“I’m excited for this new opportunity in player personnel with the Cubs, especially for the chance to be more involved with the major league team,” said McLeod. “We’ve built a tremendous group of scouts and player development staff who work tirelessly to acquire and develop the next generation of great Cubs players. I’m proud of the progress we have made, and I’m thankful for the contributions of this talented group. The work continues for all of us to realize our singular goal: win another World Series championship.”
