Cubs officially eliminated from National League Central race

CHICAGO — After recently winning five games in a row, the Chicago Cubs have now lost six games in a row. Sunday's 3-2 defeat against the St. Louis Cardinals in the Cubs' home finale capped off a 4-6 showing by Chicago in its last homestand of the season. As a result of the loss, the Cubs fell to seven games behind the Cardinals in the standings, thereby eliminating Chicago from the National League Central race.

The Cardinals and the Cubs each have six games remaining, meaning that the Cubs could not possibly catch up with the Redbirds, who clinched a playoff berth via Sunday's victory. Entering the final week of the regular season, the Cubs will stand at four games behind both the Milwaukee Brewers (86-70) and the Washington Nationals (85-69) in the chase for the two wild-card spots.

Following an off day on Monday, the North Siders are scheduled to play three games at PNC Park against the Pittsburgh Pirates and three games at Busch Stadium against the Cardinals to round out the regular season. The North Siders' current elimination number in the wild-card hunt is three, indicating that the odds are certainly stacked against the Cubs as they attempt to reach the postseason for the fifth consecutive year.
