Cubs shut down pitcher for the season

Tony Crumpton Tony Crumpton - Senior Editor -

The Chicago Cubs have decided on Monday to shut down lefty Drew Smyly for the season.

The 29-year old had Tommy John surgery 14 months ago and he just wasn't ready to contribute in the bullpen in the postseason if the Cubs make it.

There was no setback according to Theo Epstein but rather they ran out of time to get him ready this season. With the minor league season complete, there just wasn't enough mound time for him.

Smyly signed a two-year $10,000,00 guaranteed free agent contract this past offseason with the Cubs.

For his career, he has thrown 570.1 innings with a 3.74 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, and 552 strikeouts.
