Cubs to acquire lefty starter |
The Chicago Cubs are reportedly signing lefty Jaime Garcia to a minor league deal on Friday according to multiple reports.
Garcia was designated for assignment last week and released by the Blue Jays on Wednesday. For the season, he has a 3-5 record with an uninspiring 5.93 ERA in 74.1 innings pitched. However, against left-handed batters in 89 at-bats, he held them to a .188 average. The Cubs plan to use him out of the bullpen after monitoring him out the pen for a few appearances at Triple-A Iowa. The team probably hopes to see if a change of scenery can help out the lefty similar to getting Cole Hamels out of Texas. If he can get a few tough lefties out down the stretch and during the playoffs, it would be a huge score for the North Siders. It is another low-risk, high-reward move the Theo Epstein and the Cubs. The veteran has a 70-61 record with a 3.84 ERA in 210 appearances including 187 starts during his career.
