Cubs News: David Ross on non-tendering of Kyle Schwarber: "We all love Kyle"

by - Senior Editor -

Chicago Cubs manager David Ross spoke to the media on Thursday afternoon and he discussed several subjects regarding the upcoming 2021 season.

Ross was asked about the non-tendering of outfielder Kyle Schwarber earlier this month by the ballclub and his reaction to hearing of the news.

"For me, I talked to him after it happened," he said. "Some of the toughest roads I've been on, it let me to a better place whether that is with us or somebody else. Sometimes that smack in the face is a real game-changer for you a player. I can speak from experience as it happened to me a lot. I ended up in some really good positions."

In 2020, Schwarber hit only .188 with 11 homers and 24 RBI in 224 plate appearances.

Ross believes there will be a lot of interest for the young slugger in free agency.

"We all love Kyle and what he's done here for the Cubs and would welcome him back with open arms, but I have a feeling there's going to be a lot of teams picking up the phone to call his agent."

Schwarber will always be a fan favorite in Chicago since he battled back from an ACL injury in 2016 to help the ballclub break the curse and bring a title to the Cubs after a 108-year drought.

For his career as a Cub, he hit .230 with 121 dingers and 279 RBI.
