The New York Yankees announced on Monday that former Cubs top prospect Gleyber Torres will undergo Tommy John surgery and miss the rest of the 2017 season.

"Earlier today, INF Gleyber was seen by Yankees Head physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad at New York Presbyterian hospital and diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow, " stated per the Yankees press release. "Torres will undergo "Tommy John" surgery at a date to be determined. Torres is expected to be recovered for 2018 spring training camp."

The Cubs traded Torres to obtain elite closer Aroldis Chapman for the championship run last season.
