CHICAGO — With the July 31 trade deadline looming, the San Francisco Giants, who currently stand at 49-50 and could potentially be sellers on the trade market in the very near future, are reportedly scouting Chicago Cubs talent. According to baseball analyst Bruce Levine of Chicago's 670 The Score radio station, two Giants scouts were in attendance at Wrigley Field on Saturday afternoon. Furthermore, Levine also reported that the Giants have had at least one of their scouts attend nearly every series at the Friendly Confines since May.

In addition to watching an exciting contest between the Cubs and the San Diego Padres, the scouts were apparently paying particularly close attention to some of the young talent boasted by the Cubs. The Cubs, who are 54-44 and aiming to go on a run to the World Series this year, could be in the market for some roster help, especially with regard to their bullpen, and the Giants are evidently analyzing what the Cubs have to offer.

Dating back to June, the Cubs have been connected to All-Star Giants closer Will Smith, who could potentially serve as a setup man for Cubs closer Craig Kimbrel. The North Siders could also be in the market for Giants ace Madison Bumgarner or fellow Giants starter Jeff Samardzija, a former Cub. As for which Cubs players the Giants may be interested in, recent call-up Robel Garcia is a possibility, as is starting second baseman Addison Russell. There is certain to be plenty of scouting of this nature taking place over the course of the next week or so, but it is always notable when scouts are sent out on the road to size up a particular club's prospects.
