Cubs News: Jake Arrieta injury update

by - Senior Editor -

Jake Arrieta limped off the field in the third inning with a leg injury on Monday afternoon. Arrieta grabbed the back of his right leg near his hamstring after the pitch that he was hurt on.

The veteran righty tried to throw a practice pitch to see if he could continue in the game but stopped quickly without even throwing the ball. He walked off in severe pain with the trainers and manager Joe Maddon as his day ended after 2 1/3 innings and giving up three runs including two homers by Josh Bell and Max Moroff respectively.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon said following the game to reporters that it was "kind of a cramp" on his right leg and that he hoped it wasn't worse than that.

Arrieta said that he might get an MRI tomorrow but doesn't think it is serious. He thinks he will make his next start and will continue the ice pack treatment.

"As of now, I don’t foresee it being much of an issue," Arrieta said. "Grabbed mid-hamstring. Tightened up pretty good. Everything looks OK. MRI a possibility."

It appears that the Cubs have escaped a lingering hamstring issue with Arrieta if it continues to do well tomorrow and an MRI is not needed.
