The Chicago Cubs would love to secure a long-term deal beyond 2021 with their star shortstop Javy Baez.

The COVID-19 pandemic has put a hamper on some of the face-to-face meetings between the organization and Baez as he is currently at his home in Puerto Rico.

Baez updated the latest with his contract on a call with Marly Rivera of ESPN.

"Obviously, we want to reach an agreement, but right now, everything is on hiatus," he said. "Just like it happened with baseball, we decided to leave it there. We haven't talked about it anymore.

Baez is a big fan of playing baseball in Chicago.

"I'm very happy in Chicago. I believe it's one of the best organizations in the major leagues," he said. "We had several conversations but never focused on a deadline. They were very amicable conversations where we communicated well with each other."

The 27-year old realizes that baseball is a big-time business and will how to see what happens.

"It's a blessing when a player can wear the same uniform their whole life - but it's a business. For me, it's about loyalty. This is the team that has seen me grow up," he said.

Hopefully, the Cubs and Baez work out a long-term deal because fans would love it if 'El Mago' spends his entire career in Chicago.

In 2019, Baez hit .281 with 29 homers, 85 RBIs, and had a .847 OPS.
