Cubs News: Maddon on Schwarber batting leadoff: "He looks great"

by - Senior Editor -

Chicago Cubs slugger Kyle Schwarber has been batting leadoff this season as the team tries to repeat as World Champions in 2017. However, it has not been going well for Schwarber as he is currently batting only .179 with five homers, 13 RBI, and .313 on-base percentage. These batting numbers are some of most mediocre in all of the starters throughout baseball.

However, Cubs manager Joe Maddon said on the 670 The Score on Tuesday that he thinks that Schwarber is doing great.

"I think he looks great and that’s what I’m talking about results vs. process," Maddon said on the radio. "He, to me looks very good at the plate right now. He’s one of our three best hitters arguably among him KB and Rizzo. Just because he’s hitting leadoff, I mean for whatever reason that’s sticking in people’s minds, and really it’s about the process. He’s getting his walks, he sees a lot of pitches, and he’s coming up at good times. So, it’s going to payoff for us. I love what he’s doing right now, and I think he looks very good."

In 2015, Schwarber hit .246 with 16 home runs, 43 RBIs with an excellent .842 OPS in only 69 games (273 at-bats) in his rookie season. For his short career, he is batting .219 with 21 homers, 57 RBI, and .338 on-base percentage.

The Chicago Cubs drafted him in the first round (4th overall) in the 2014 MLB Draft.
