by - Senior Writer -

CHICAGO — Led by starting pitcher Cole Hamels, the Chicago Cubs (35-27) took down the rival St. Louis Cardinals (31-30) by a final score of 3-1 at Wrigley Field on Friday. The series opener at the Friendly Confines saw Hamels throw eight scoreless innings, in which he tabbed a season-best 10 strikeouts.

At the plate, shortstop Javier Baez did not take long to come through with the winning hit, as his first-inning 2-run homer provided the Cubs with a lead that they did not relinquish. Cubs catcher Victor Caratini also contributed to the scoring with an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth. He went 2-for-2 with one walk on the afternoon.
