CHICAGO — It took a while for the Chicago Cubs (74-63) to go to work at the plate on Labor Day, but the North Siders finally came alive in the bottom of the seventh. Plating five runs in the seventh frame on Monday, the Cubs went on to defeat the Seattle Mariners (58-81) by a final score of 5-1.

The series opener at Wrigley Field saw the Cubs struggle with runners in scoring position until an RBI single by Anthony Rizzo put them on the scoreboard in the seventh inning. After that, Kyle Schwarber smacked a bases-clearing triple that provided the Cubs with a lead that they did not relinquish.
