WATCH: Molina nearly decapitates Chatwood with flying bat

by - Senior Writer -

ST. LOUIS — St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina reached for an outside pitch and whiffed badly on a strikeout to end the third inning against the Chicago Cubs. In fact, he whiffed so badly that he was unable to follow all the way through on his swing.

Perhaps, as an example of gamesmanship to try and intimidate young Cubs starting pitcher Tyler Chatwood, Molina did not seem to make much of an effort to prevent his bat from flying out of his hands and in the direction of the mound.

Molina, forever one of MLB's true bad boys, did not seem at all fazed by the incident, walking slowly off the field, empty-handed and unconcerned with letting Chatwood know that the bat toss was unintentional.

Chatwood was able to avoid getting decapitated by the helicoptering bat, but he struck out looking to start the fourth frame. So, maybe, it was a small victory for Molina, after all.
