Report: Cubs discussing trade for Angels reliever

by - Senior Editor -

Monday's non-waiver Trade Deadline is only a few hours away (4 p.m. EST), and the Cubs have already made significant moves with the additions of relievers Mike Montgomery and Aroldis Chapman to help the much-maligned bullpen.

However, the Cubs are still working the phones as they have called the Anaheim Angels about their relief pitcher Joe Smith according to multiple reports.

The Cubs and two other teams are currently trying to work out a last-minute trade with the Angels for Smith.

Smith has a 3.82 ERA with six saves, 25 strikeouts and a 1.30 WHIP this season. For his career, he has a 2.94 ERA with 29 saves, 461 strikeouts, and a 1.20 WHIP.

In June, he has on the disabled list with a hamstring injury.

He was drafted by the Mets in the third round of the 2006 MLB draft.
