Report: Cubs will discuss extension with Jake Arrieta |
The Chicago Cubs have already made a huge offseason move trading away Jorge Soler for elite closer Wade Davis.
However, the big news might not be the only one this offseason as ESPN reporter Jesse Rogers reports that agent Scott Boras and the Cubs will discuss a possible new deal in January. Arrieta will be a free agent after the 2017 season and will be 31 years old. Currently, the Cubs will only have Jon Lester on contract of all their pitchers on the 40-man roster after the 2017 season. In 2016, Arrieta was 18-8 with 3.10 ERA with 190 strikeouts and 1.08 WHIP. For his career, he is 74-46 with 3.58 ERA with 907 strikeouts and 1.16 WHIP. Arrieta was 2-1 in four games started in the postseason with a 3.63 ERA in 22.1 innings giving up only 17 hits, with seven walks, and 25 strikeouts.
