Cubs announce several roster moves

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today announced the following roster moves. The Cubs have selected the contract of left-handed pitcher Justin Steele from Double-A Tennessee and claimed left-handed pitcher Ian Clarkin off waivers from the Chicago White Sox. The Cubs have also acquired right-handed pitcher Rowan Wick from the San Diego Padres for infielder Jason Vosler. Steele, Clarkin and Wick are now on Chicago’s 40-man roster.

Additionally, infielder Jack Reinheimer was claimed off waivers by the Texas Rangers, while outfielder Johnny Field and left-handed pitcher Jerry Vasto have cleared waivers and been assigned outright to Triple-A Iowa.

Chicago’s 40-man roster now stands at 39 players.

Steele, 23, combined to go 2-2 with a 2.31 ERA (12 ER/46.2 IP) in 11 starts last season across three levels of the Cubs minor league system, reaching the Double-A level for the first time in his career to close out the year. He struck out 53 batters while walking only 13, an average of 10.2 strikeouts per nine innings and 2.5 walks per nine innings, while limiint foes to a .176 batting average. Steele concluded his year by making six starts for the Mesa Solar Sox in the Arizona Fall League (1-1, 5.79 ERA).

The 6-foot-2 southpaw earned 2017 mid-season Carolina League All-Star honors with Single-A Myrtle Beach when he went 6-7 with a 2.92 ERA (32 ER/98.2 IP) in 20 starts. Steele was originally drafted by the Cubs in the fifth round of the 2014 Draft out of George County High School in Lucedale, MS. In five seasons in the Cubs minor league system, Steels has gone 16-17 with a 3.35 ERA (105 ER/282.0 IP) in 69 appearances, all but five as a starter.

Clarkin, 23, was a first round draft pick (33rd overall) by the New York Yankees in 2013 and has gone 18-24 with a 3.55 ERA (138 ER/349.2 IP) in 81 minor league appearances (66 starts) covering five seasons in the Yankees (2013-14, 16-17) and White Sox (2017-18) organizations. He joined the White Sox as part of the seven-player trade that sent Todd Frazier and David Robertson to the Yankees on July 19, 2017.

The 6-foot-2 southpaw went 4-5 with a 4.76 ERA (45 ER/85.0 IP) in 25 appearances (12 starts) last season across three levels of the White Sox minor league system, reaching Double-A for the first time in his career.

Wick, 26, is 8-6 with 26 saves and a 2.84 ERA (45 ER/142.2 IP) in 130 minor league relief outings in the St. Louis Cardinals and Padres systems. He began the 2018 campaign with Double-A San Antonio, advanced to Triple-A El Paso on July 1 and made his major league debut in August. Wick combined to go 4-4 with 14 saves and a 2.67 ERA (16 ER/54.0 IP) in 49 minor league appearances last year, earning mid-season Texas League All-Star honors, and went 0-1 with a 6.48 ERA (6 ER/8.1 IP) in 10 major league relief outings.

The 6-foot-3 southpaw was selected by St. Louis in the ninth round of the 2012 Draft out of Cypress College. He was drafted as a catcher and made the conversion to pitcher during the 2015 campaign.

Vosler, 25, was originally selected by the Cubs in the 16th round of the 2014 Draft out of Northeastern University. He has batted .247 (451-for-1,825) with 98 doubles, 58 homers and 276 RBI in 514 games covering five seasons in the Cubs minor league system.

Field, 26, was claimed off waivers from the Minnesota Twins on November 1.

Reinheimer, 26, was claimed off waivers from the New York Mets on November 2.

Vasto, 26, was claimed off waivers from the Kansas City Royals on October 31.
